Starting counselling can feel unfamiliar, and it is completely normal to have questions. I have answered some of the questions

you may have below. If there is anything else you would like to know, you are very welcome to contact me.

Is it normal to feel nervous about counselling?

Yes. It is very normal to feel nervous, particularly if you have never had counselling before or are unsure what to expect.

There will be no pressure to tell me everything straight away. Our first session gives us time to get to know one another and allows you to experience what it feels like to talk with me.

What happens in the first session?

I will invite you to tell me a little about yourself, what has brought you to counselling and what life feels like for you at the moment.

I will listen deeply and try to understand what is happening for you. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions and decide whether working with me feels right for you.

What can I talk about in counselling?

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say, what you want to change or where you should begin.

Sometimes people come to counselling feeling so overwhelmed that it is difficult to put their experiences into words. We can begin with what is happening for you now and take things at your pace.

Will I have to talk about things if i'm not ready to?

No. I will not force you to talk about anything you do not feel ready to explore.

You will have a choice about what you bring to counselling. We will work at a pace that feels manageable for you, and you can tell me if something feels too difficult or uncomfortable.

        Is counselling confidential?

Counselling is confidential, and providing a private space where you can speak openly is an important part of our work.

There are some circumstances in which confidentiality may need to be broken, usually when there is a serious concern about safety or where there is a legal requirement. I will explain the boundaries of confidentiality clearly before we begin, and you are welcome to ask me any questions about this.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

There is no single answer because everybody comes to counselling with different experiences and needs.

Some people find that a shorter period of counselling is right for them, while others value having longer to explore things more deeply. We can discuss what you are hoping for and review our work together as it develops.

How long are sessions / how often will we meet?

Each counselling session lasts for 50 minutes. Sessions usually take place weekly at an agreed time.

How do I take the first step?

You can contact me with any questions or to arrange an initial conversation. You do not need to explain everything in your first message. A few words about what has brought you to counselling are enough. Use the contact form or email me laura@lauradowncounselling.co.uk
